Excellence in Communication & Language

Lane End Primary School Early Years Foundation Stage effectively supports the development of communication and language skills of all children. It is at the core of all that we do, and we are proud of the provision that we provide to our local community. The environments within both the Nursery and Reception classrooms are carefully planned and designed to encourage and enable children to use and develop language and to communicate effectively with each other, practitioners and their families.  All practitioners have a shared understanding and vision and work tirelessly to ensure children leave early years ready for  KS1.

Early Years Service - Quality Assurance Standard

Centre of Excellence for Communication & Language

Our highly qualified and experienced EYFS practitioners have gone through a rigorous auditing process to assess the quality of interactions and ability to support the communication and language skills of all children. We are very proud to be one of the highest scoring settings.

We regularly host sessions for other settings to model effective communication and quality interactions, as well as supporting Buckinghamshire Council events such as 'Communication Week'.

Bucks EYFS awards

Excellence in early years award - Finalist 2024

Following our nomination for the 'Schools with Excellence in Early Years Award', we were delighted to be one of three finalists out of a total of 120 nominations across Buckinghamshire.

Schools with excellence in Early Years are 'determined to ensure that every interaction will play an important role in building the understanding and skills children need throughout their education and the rest of their lives.'

Helicopter stories

Helicopter Stories

Helicopter Stories are used across Nursery and Reception in order to develop children’s vocabulary; this begins with the two-year-old children and is taken with the Reception children up to Year 1.

Where children are not yet able to verbalise a story, approaches used with the youngest children are adopted regardless of age, and progress is often rapid and engagement levels are high.

Alongside the use of Helicopter Stories, Reception children have access to a story telling space, enhanced with props, puppets and theatres. Children often choose to act out their own stories as a part of their play.

Lane End Primary school is a Helicopter Story Hub; this means we share our excellent practice with other settings.

Poetry Basket

Poetry basket is a resource that uses poems with actions to help children develop their language skills, confidence and independence.

Children can participate in the poems by acting out the actions that go along with the words.

Reciting the poems increases children's memory and supports the development of phonological awareness skills of rhyme and rhythm. Children demonstrate increased confidence to recite and perform the poems toegether - as class, small groups or as individuals.

Poetry basket is explicitly timetabled to teach new poems and it is also a part of the children's continuous provison. They are able to access the poetry spoons throughout the day, enjoying performing their poems to or with their friends.
