Science
At Lane End Primary School, we offer a rich science curriculum which provides opportunities for practical lessons around the Thinking, Doing, Talking Science approach. This has been deliberately chosen as research undertaken by the EEF showed the approach had a positive impact on pupils’ attitudes to science, science lessons, and practical work in particular. The programme also had a particularly positive effect on girls and on pupils with low prior attainment. The use of talk and discussion to promote learning also ties in with our Oracy work as a Voice 21 school.
Our science curriculum aims to broaden the children’s understanding of the world around them, promoting a love for enquiry and a thirst for exploring new ideas and concepts. We want to introduce children to difficult and interesting concepts to grapple with and think about. At Lane End Primary School, our curriculum intent aligns to the aims of the National Curriculum:
- develop scientific knowledge and conceptual understanding through units that relate to the specific disciplines of biology, chemistry and physics
- develop understanding of the nature, processes and methods of science through different types of science enquiries that help them to answer scientific questions about the world around them
- are equipped with the scientific knowledge required to understand the uses and implications of science, today and for the future
As well as the full range of practical scientific enquiries, we also engage the children in their science learning through: Bright Ideas Time, drama, deep thinking time, problem solving and opportunities to use their scientific knowledge and understanding in other curriculum subjects.
