Our Curriculum
Curriculum Rationale
Lane End Primary School has adopted the National Curriculum as its core curriculum. We recognise the challenge this provides our children as well as the breadth of subjects which is important to the experiences the children have as they move through the school. This is important as we recognise that a larger percentage of our children than is found nationally are classed as ‘Children in Need’. We also have a higher than national average of children with SEND and eligible for Pupil Premium. This puts a majority of our children at a disadvantage to their peers – often prior to starting with us in Nursery or Reception. It is therefore important that we maintain high expectations of our pupils to close gaps quickly and we use the National Curriculum to do this. It also ensures that children within the school who are ready and able can access appropriate challenge.
We also understand the National Curriculum is a knowledge-based curriculum. This ties in with our belief and understanding of learning and how children at Lane End Primary School learn best. (Please see our Teaching & Learning Policy for more information). We believe children need to have a good knowledge in each subject area in order to support skill development and that knowledge is built up through explicit teaching and revisiting across a range of subjects in the curriculum. This supports the way our curriculum is planned and is detailed within our curriculum intent.
Our core curriculum (the National Curriculum) is then broadened through the range of additional experiences we provide for every child as they move through the school. This is part of our wider curriculum and is designed to support children to develop and progress in the wider sense in order to fulfil our vision statement of children being the best version of themselves by the time they leave us at the end of Year 6. Our curriculum Intent explains more about the broader curriculum we offer and its purpose.
